Columbus Crime Patrol
columbus Crime Patrol, (CCP) is a group of highly-trained pepole patrollers working to increase safety in Columbus neighborhoods. Equipped only with flashlights, two-way radios, and their wits, CCP patrollers deter criminals, build neighborhood awareness of crime prevention techniques, assist in the apprehension of suspects, and provide first aid when needed. There are currently 20-25 patrollers in five neighborhoods.
During the past 16 years of operation, the patrollers have reported over 39,000 incidents. The results of the program have been outstanding. They have been an integral part of over 800 arrests. The patrollers have originated fire/squad runs, provided first aid on several occasions, and provided CPR once. They have been successful in finding lost children, assisting the police with the arrest of numerous wanted felons (one who was wanted on a homicide warrant), identifying an arsonist, identifying over 100 drunk drivers, assisting the police in capturing a fleeing suspect who had just assaulted a Columbus Police Officer, leading police to and identifying a kidnapping and attempted *** suspect, and assisting in the apprehension of several individuals carrying concealed weapons. The patrollers are regularly subpoenaed for court appearances and have also assisted the community with clean-up campaigns and other support-related activities. CCP is proud to report that 60 former patrollers are now employed as law enforcement officers throughout the state of Ohio, 32 of that number are Columbus Division of Police officers.
CCP operates four distinct projects sites throughout the City of Columbus, three in city neighborhoods and one patrolling the multi-use trail that runs along the Olentangy River and parks within the City of Columbus. These sites are:
