Our department says the dogs are not to be used for crowd control, so the dog would not be there.

Having the dog on the field may be great for crowd control, However, close proximity to players and other on field participants does create a liability. Muzzles work wonders for preventing unwanted bites. The Police K9 is trained to key on aggressive acts. Running, yelling, and jumping around are all used in building the k9's aggression. These movements are critical key points in the k9's prey drive as well as handler protection training.

Cont., As a K-9 handler as well as my departments Chief Administrator, I can say that Officer presence is a valuable tool that is enhanced by a K9 team. A muzzle does not lessen that effect, it only shows responsibility and the potential of the K9 to act once the muzzle is removed.
