Dynamic of Discretion - The Traffic Stop

Just a simple traffic stop gives you multiple discretionary enforcement options. In this Police Dynamics training video, we discuss how to exercise executive discretion when making enforcement decisions on the streets. The basic rule is to let the nature of the offense determine the range of options and let the character of the offender determine which option you choose. I like the video. I show it to rookies and vets. Often, I think young bucks are eager to get out and exercise their authority. Later in the career, I think it's easy to get cynical and just say, "Everyone's getting cited."
