There is a lot of information of the shooting of Officer Schmidt during this incident in open source media. Some of the facts: though mortally wounded, Officer Schmidt refused to go down. After pushing his partner to safety, he shot Lard several times (Nuss, 2011). Lard also refused to go down. Officer Schmidt pleaded for his life, to which Lard made a very direct and insulting response before executing him with a final shot (Nuss, 2011). Sgt. Overstreet also returned fire, striking the suspect (Heard, 2011). Lard was high on methamphetamine at the time of the incident. Before the shooting occurred, other occupants of the car heard Lard say: "today is the day" over and over (Nuss, 2011). Lard had a history of violence, including burglary and assault on police. In 2003, he punched a detective in the face during a welfare check (Nuss, 2011). Lard was wanted for a 2010 rape of a 15-year old victim who named him as the suspect (Hale-Shelton, 2011). He shot Officer Schmidt because he did not want to be arrested. Viewing the video, it is difficult to see that Officer Schmidt was shot in the neck by the first round fired. He was coping with a massive and probably fatal injury while helping another officer to safety, protecting civilians and trying to radio for help. He and the other officer did return fire, according to the media reports. I applaud the Trumann Police Chief for releasing this video for officers to learn from. Officer Schmidt is a hero and he died protecting others. To criticize his actions is wrong, but we can learn from his experience. I researched this incident for a book I published last month. The book examines sixty line-of-duty deaths in 2011, including this one. It is called Officer Down 2012: Lessons Learned from Line-of-Duty Deaths and is available at www.dynamicpolicetraining.com.

THE REASON THAT THE WOUNDED OFFICER DID NOT RETURN FIRE WAS BECAUSE HE WAS SHOT IN THE HAND. HE WAS TRYING TO RETRIEVE HIS WEAPON IN WHICH HE HAD DROPPED AT SOME POINT BUT DUE TO THE WOUND HE WAS UNABLE TO RETRIEVE THE WEAPON. THE OFFICER THAT YOU SEE FALLING BEHIND THE VEHICLE IS BEING PUSHED BY OFFICER SCHMIDT IN AN EFFORT TO GET HIM OUT OF THE LINE OF FIRE. EVENTUALLY THE OTHER OFFICER RETURNED FIRE WOUNDING THE SUSPECT.

I was woundering the samething why didn't any of the other officers return fire? I don't understand that; did I miss something in the video? I did hear shots fired towards the end of the video but still something doesn't make sense on the officers part. "Head on a Swivel - senses 360 degrees brothers and sisters of the badge".

I wonder does Arkansas Police carry real bullets in their guns? Did I miss something or did we just witness a officer attending to a wounded officer while the offender is walking around the car????????
